Can Jesus’ death on the cross be understood apart from O.T.

Is it possible for Jesus death on the Cross to be understood apart from the Old Testament? If we were given only the New Testament do you think his death would still make sense?

I Guess what I am really asking is..."What role does the Old Testament really play in the Church of Christ?" I would appreciate anybody's feedback!

The old testament foreshadows the new testament, so we can see similarities and parallel Jesus as the sacrificial lamb. The old testament is important because we can learn about God, his nature, and his ways and 'know' God and know his character. How he punishes the wicked and protects the just. How he keeps it promises. It helps us understand Him which makes us understand the new testament. We also learn about man and the same mistakes we make. Hope that helps

Think about it for a moment, where did the apostles start from to talk about Jesus. Where did the go to prove he was the Messiah? Even when Paul talked to the Corinthians how many times did he go back to Old Testament stories to show an example of the point he was making.
Let’s consider a few verses:
2 Timothy 3:16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness…
Considering this was written around the mid 60’s AD, what other scripture was around?
Romans 15:4 For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope…
Galatians 3:24 So the law was put in charge to lead us to Christ[a] that we might be justified by faith.

I think we as Christians do ourselves a major disservice when we don’t understand the OT.

You cannot understand anything about God, judgment, sins, or mercy without the Old Testament. And anyway, why would anyone want to do without such a treasure trove of spiritual gems as are found there?

Yes, i do agree with you that without old testament we can't understand the god and his kindness to us.The god died to save human kind and if today we forget old testament than will it be help us to survive, no we must remember the old testament.

You are right we will not be able to understand anything without old testament, in fact it is the base on which we can define new testament by taking old testament into account.
